The petitioner society's writ petition sought mandatory Front-of-Package Labelling (FoPL) on packaged foods; by order dated 13.08.2026 the Court had asked the Union and FSSAI to take a decision on visual appearance and place it on record. FSSAI's affidavit dated 28.08.2026 proposed a red hexagonal front-of-pack warning reading 'HIGH FAT', 'HIGH SUGAR', 'HIGH SALT' and/or 'HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE' for products high in two or more nutrients of concern (added saturated fat, added sugar, salt) measured against ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 thresholds, in a font one point larger than the back-of-pack nutrition table, with exemptions for single-ingredient foods and foods inherently rich in fat, sugar or salt, and a two-phase roll-out (Phase II extending to products high in any one nutrient).…
